3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore, if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Revelation 3:3-5[JC1]
Last week we define prayer and discussed how Jesus advised to pray unto God. Prayer was common practice for priests and prophets of the Bible time. But thanks be to God, by faith in Jesus Christ, everyone can pray to the LORD God – anywhere, wherever, and every time. 15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble; He said, I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” Psalms 50:15 (NKJV)
Today we are looking at why we pray[JC2] . Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” Said the Lord God. Isaiah 43:7 Unfortunately man fell short of the glory of God, when they subscribed to the lies of the Devil. As a result, man became empty, naked, and void of the glory and presence of God. God appeared to be dead to man but no, God is not dead, He is life everlasting, it was man who died to God. Man became alienated from the life of God, spiritually ignorant and blind. However, some people were eager to fill the vacuum, left by the segregation between man and His Maker. I created you for my glory, God said – essentially to worship me in spirit and in truth. When[JC3] God delivered Israel from the Egyptian bondage, He told them why saying ‘Thus says the LORD: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. Exodus 8:20 Yes, that is the principal reason why you pray, serve, and worship God. Jesus said, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV) This is the essence of our relationship with God, to worship Him in spirit and in truth, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.
Before Christ, people worshiped God in whatever way they thought fit to do. Some turned to deaf and dumb idols, while many worshiped self, sin, and Satan. But when God delivered Israel from slavery, He gave them the ten Commandment, the Law as popularly known, to teach them how to serve, seek and worship the LORD[JC4] . Until Jesus who came, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life… For the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Hebrews 7:16-19 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2 (NKJV) Therefore Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, get close to Him, or worship Him, except through Me. John 14:6 (NKJV)
We are created to serve the Lord. This is the reason why Jesus Came, to show us the way, the truth, and the life by which God is glorified in us. Through Christ also we have access and knowledge of what prayer or worship is all about. It is to serve God in spirit, in truth[JC5] , and holding fast to the end. Just as God by a mighty hand delivered Israel from Egyptian bondage to serve Him, we also are delivered also from sin, evil thoughts, poisonous words, and hateful actions. So that we can serve the living God in the beauty of His Holiness. The ten commandments only thought the people what to do but left them powerless to do it. But faith in Jesus Christ, empowers you to serve the Lord in spirit and in truth. You are enabled and anointed as a royal priest before God. That you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9[JC6] . Therefore, Jesus said, 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NKJV) God must be honored, glorified, and worshiped with our lives.
To worship God should be the first reason why we must pray to God. Remember, that prayer is not a means to an end, but the exercise of life and relationship with our Father God. That is why Jesus warned His church, saying: Hold fast and repent, watch and pray, He who overcomes …I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels… Therefore, as children of the living God; we must adhere to sound doctrine, meditate on the word of God like you literally eat and drink to stay alive. Pray without ceasing because your eternal life depends on it. And be strong in the Lord, pray always to exercise and align your thought, word, and action with God and His Holy word. Finally, Jesus promised us the gift of the Holy Spirit; to teach remind and empower us to be true worshippers. John 4:23 From next week by the grace of God, we will further explore the subject of the Holy Spirit. Please join us to share some deep insight. Thank you and God bless you.
[JC1]You pray not because of what you want but for who you are.
It is idolatry to offer prayer to man or anything other than God the creator of all things.
[JC2]The Bible shows that Prayer and worship are synonymous because it is all about communicating and relating with the Creator God. It should be natural to worship God for we are created in His image.
[JC3]and to do so willfully, joyfully, righteously, and peacefully.
37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40 (NKJV)
[JC4]16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. Hebrews 7:16-19 (KJV)
16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life. 17 For He testifies:
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.”
18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness, 19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Hebrews 7:16-19 (NKJV)
(Again we pray to draw close to God which is our best form of worship.)
[JC5]Finally, Jesus not only taught what, how, but he made us able to by his grace and gift of the Holy Spirit.
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV)
[JC6]This is the reason why Jesus Christ came. So that we know the only true God and worship Him accordingly. to His will, in Spirit and in truth.
Note God created man for His own Glory so the He can be glorified in man.
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 (NKJV)
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)
